Pizza with the Martins Saturday, Feb 28 2009

The Martin’s came over for dinner and we ordered Dewey’s pizza.  We ordered a half pepperoni half meatball pizza and half cheese half caprice pizza.  Everyone had pizza they enjoyed.  Kim and I drank a glass of Big House The Lineup wine.  It’s a blend from the central coast of California.  I have to say it was a  nice accompaniment to the pizza.

I’m not sure if we are having dessert tonight.  The kids are currently playing nicely so I don’t want to rock the boat.

I hope you have a good weekend.  Happy eating.

Early soccer clinic… early dinner Friday, Feb 27 2009

The children complained that they were “starving” after school.  Since we were on our own for dinner, and had soccer practice at 5:30, I picked up chinese carryout at a little joint in the loop.  The kids got their favorite, hot braised chicken and shrimp fried rice.  I baked a lemon pound cake earlier in the day, so that was dessert.  I opted not to have wine tonight.  Instead, I made a cup of brown rice green tea.  If you’ve never had it, I highly recommend this tea.  I often imagine I’m sitting in a lovely Japanese garden when I drink it, which is one of my favorite things to do.

Good evening and happy eating.

70 degrees and grilled chicken Thursday, Feb 26 2009

The weather today was fantastic.  I  couldn’t wait to use the grill.  I had some chicken wings in the frig so I put them on the grill.  I also made some Mediterranean couscous and mixed vegetables.  Peter and I finished the Alamos Malbec.  The children made ice cream sundaes for dessert and Peter and I had a piece of dark chocolate.  Everyone’s content.

We are currently relaxing on the sofa, listening to music (U2), and finishing our wine.  A nice way to end the day.

Happy eating.

Chili and a Cab. Wednesday, Feb 25 2009

I had ground beef left from yesterday, so I decided to make a pot of chili.  Our friends from Michigan Rodney and Cookie and their little one Jamerson are in town so they joined us for dinner.   I opened a bottle of an old favorite Louise Martini Cabernet Sauvigion and it didn’t disappoint.  Its not  a very complex wine but it was the perfect depth for the chili.  After finishing the cab, we opened a bottle of Alamos Malbec.

We had dessert with lunch (we met at the boat house), so we are skipping dessert tonight.  I think food is so much more enjoyable when you share it with family and friends.  Tonight’s dinner was a testament to that belief.  Here’s wishing you a great evening.  Happy eating.

Peter’s favorite meal Tuesday, Feb 24 2009

Tonight’s dinner, my husbands favorite, spaghetti and meatballs with homemade garlic bread.  We enjoyed a bottle  of Neu Directions Malbec.  The wine wasn’t the best compliment for the meal, but its so tasty we didn’t seem to mind.  One of the children had a carmel tart for dessert and the other had fun dip from their valentine’s day bag.  Peter and I are having a couple of pieces of really nice dark chocolate (one of my favorites) for dessert.

Goodnight and happy eating.

Lazy Sunday Monday, Feb 23 2009

The family enjoyed a day at home relaxing and just being together.  I didn’t want to make dinner too fussy, so I just grilled pork loins and made some rice and corn.  Our wine choice tonight  S’2006 Red Corteaux du Languedoc (very yummy).  It’s really a nice treat to have a stress-free family day.  I really appreciate it.   Wishing you joy and peace with your family.  Happy eating.

A night off…Pizza Saturday, Feb 21 2009

The kids and I ordered pizza and are planning to watch a movie.  There are no activities scheduled for this evening.  I’m really looking forward to a quiet evening.  I have wine left from last night to enjoy so I won’t open a new bottle.

Tomorrow night is New City School Trivia night, so I’m not cooking.   I’ll write again Sunday.  Until then, happy eating.

We eat breakfast too. Thursday, Feb 19 2009

I thought I’d start the morning off right and have breakfast.  I always insist my kids have a healthy start but I don’t always do the same for myself.  Starting today, I’m committed to giving my family and myself a healthy start to each day.  My breakfast started this morning with orange juice with added vitamin c powder.  Next I put the tea kettle on for green tea.  I finished breakfast with yogurt and granola, fresh blueberries, and raspberries.

Consider joining me in having a healthy start to your day.  I’ll keep you updated on my progress.  Have a good day.  Happy eating.

Piano lessons were cancelled for this evening so we have time to have a leisurely dinner.   The menu:  northwood chicken legs, potato pancakes, and chunky apple sauce.   I opened a bottle of my favorite inexpensive pinot noir, Pinot Evil from France.  To find a likeable pinot for under $10 is almost impossible, but this one is good and is often on sale at Schnucks for $7.

Again, happy eating.

Grilling like its…summer Tuesday, Feb 17 2009

Burgers, green beans, and cantaloupe top tonight’s menu.   I went grocery shopping late afternoon with the kids and they chose dinner.  Peter and I enjoyed a bottle of Ben Marco Malbec.   Dinner was good and the wine was fabulous.   One of the kids had a cutie tofutti soy cream sandwich and the other had vanilla ice cream with whip cream for dessert.  Peter and I skipped dessert and just enjoyed the bottle of wine.  My mother-in-law dropped by and had a glass of wine with us.

I’ve had a few people ask how I put dinner together so easily.  Our schedules are so hectic during the week that I “cheat” to make dinners quick and simple.  With tonight’s dinner I purchased ground beef that was already shaped as patty’s (Wholefoods and Schnucks carry them), and green beans in a microwave bag.  So all I had to do is season the meat and but them on the grill and season the green bean after the microwave.  I cut the cantaloupe into cubes and that’s dinner.

I hope this little “cheat sheet” helps.  Happy eating.

Quartet Seraphin Benefit Concert Monday, Feb 16 2009

This afternoon the family went to my mother-in-law’s quartet benefit concert.    It was a lovely concert followed by wine and appetizers provided by yours truly, Cafe Martin.  There were about 50 people in attendance.  Everyone seemed to have a good time; there was very little food left over.  Hats off to Roz Wykes for making some fabulous desserts.

Because we ate so much this afternoon, the kids had a light dinner of chicken soup.  I ate a bowl of ice cream (rum raisin).  After such a full day of activity the family is ready for an early night.  Goodnight and happy eating.
